Attractions & Activities

There is so much to see and do nearby our Holiday Park. Stay a little longer and explore all the beauty and adventure of the South Island’s High Country...

Ohau Skifield
The Ohau Snow Field is located at just ½ hours’ drive from Omarama. Some details:
  • Open late June to early October (depending on snow levels)
  • Suits all abilities
  • Day lodge, two ski lifts

Clay Cliffs
A few minutes drive towards Twizel is the turn-off to the Clay Cliffs. The Clay Cliffs are a natural geological formation created more than 5 million years ago. Set into the high country landscape of the Mackenzie basin, the cliffs are impressively sculpted into “Wild West” bluffs, pinnacles and deep ravines.
  • access for a minimal charge
  • car park and walking tracks.

Local Cafes, Restaurants and Winery
We are just a 5 minute walk from the beautiful Clay Cliffs Winery, and so close (a few steps!) to a number of other awesome cafes and restaurants - including the Wrinkly Rams (sheep shearing experience and cafe/restaurant) and our friendly 'local pub'. There is also a Post Office and Lotto inside the local supermarket just a short stroll away.

Gliding
Imagine gliding soundlessly over the mountainous Mackenzie Basin landscape. Southern Soaring is the leading South Island gliding instruction company, Omarama Airfield. There is nothing like it!
  • Guided, beginner and scenic glider flights available.

Horse Treks
Many horse treks are available from October to Mid-April, travelling in the spectacular scenery of the Mackenzie Basin. Treks range from short experiences to full 6 days’ adventure. We are happy to help you choose the trek that is most suited for you.

Ahuriri Conservation Park
49,000 hectares of recreation land, administered by the Department of Conservation. This is a stunning area of native forest, open tussockland, wetlands and beech and tawhai forest. Enjoy:

  • Brown trout
  • Rainbow trout
  • Salmon in the Waitaki River in season. March and April are the best months for salmon fishing
  • Licenses are required for trout and salmon fishing in New Zealand.

Hunting
The mountains around Omarama offer fine game hunting opportunities; red deer, tahr, and chamois can all be found in the district. Hunting guides are widely available.

Omarama Golf Course
Within a short walk from the park is the Omarama golf course, a great nine-hole par 72 course.

The Ohau Snow Field is located at just ½ hours’ drive from Omarama
Mt St John Observatory, Tekapo
One of the few observatories in the world that remain unaffected by light pollution, Mt St John Observatory, a working research station, sits high on top of a mountain on the shores of Lake Tekapo.
The views from the glass-walled summit cafe are magnificent during the day, and Earth and Sky, Tekapo, offer day/night guided tours with stargazing.

The Mackenzie and Waitaki areas hold many cultural and sporting events every year.
