That Dam Race
Special Events Aoraki are working with Omarama School to create an exciting new event that will bring stacks of cycling visitors and their families to the area, providing benefits to the school, local businesses and the wider community.
That Dam Race is a new cycling event designed to attract participants from Christchurch, Mid and South Canterbury, Waitaki, Dunedin and Central Otago. It is a perfect event to round off the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the Benmore Dam.
That Dam Race is planned as two cycling races/events that will take place simultaneously.
is a road cycling challenge that will take in some of New Zealand’s most beautiful scenery along with three of the hydroelectric dams on the Waitaki River. The course runs from the high country of Omarama to Otematata, over the Benmore Dam, around Lake Aviemore, over the Aviemore Dam to a turnaround point at the Waitaki Dam and then back to Omarama via State Highway 83.
At 108km it exceeds that magic 100km distance needed to attract aspiring leaders of the bunch or to enthuse those riding with the pack (1,200 m total elevation gain throughout the course).
is a shorter 30km off-road race that will take in part of the Alps to Ocean trail, suitable for mountain bikers and is designed to attract schools and family groups with their own challenge while they support riders doing the PowerHouse.
And the date
We’ve pencilled in 5th December 2015 but we need to confirm some access issues,
mobilise sponsorship and get the necessary planning through, and make sure we align the stars soThat Dam Race does not clash with other events or activities.
Both races will start and finish in Omarama. A festive cycling village will be set up to welcome riders where everyone can kick back and enjoy great southern sunshine and Mackenzie Country hospitality; family fun activities, displays, the podium area for presentations, the main HQ tent for registration, live music, with the Omarama School providing rider facilities including food and plenty of refreshments.
At this stage we are in the process of approaching sponsors and growing support for the event from all avenues of the local and cycling community.
